Treehouse Retreat

Redesigning this 2,000-square-foot house on Mount Bromont, Que., presented Romina with a unique challenge: to create living spaces that strike a delicate balance between being understated enough to highlight the stunning surroundings, and warm enough to be innately welcoming. First, she developed a sleek, monochromatic envelope defined by generous stretches of veiny stone, greyed woods and neutral upholstered pieces. Then, she set off this quiet backdrop with an unexpected mix of iconic pine antiques, playful framed prints and judicious splashes of colour — a lounge chair in zesty mustard, sage-green walls that make the principal bedroom feel both fresh and soft, and a rosy kilim runner offering warm welcome in the entry. For cosiness, she also layered in diverse textures — from supple velvet and nubbly wovens to ethereal linen and delicate quilting. With its marriage of old and new, hard and soft, dark and light, the reworked home now suits its owners — outdoorsy empty-nesters who came to the area for its skiing, kayaking, hiking and biking — to a T.
